Mobile apps now offer more than entertainment or fitness aids. Whether you are painting your walls, planning a home improvement project, tearing down and replacing your stairs, fixing leaks or looking for DIY tips on cleaning grout off your bathroom tiles, there are mobile apps to tack into your tool belt and help you every step of the way.

Here is a look at some of the best home improvement apps out there that the handyman (and woman) will love.

1. Colorsnap (Free for iOS and Android)

Want the stunning jet blue shade of your iPad sleeve on your wall? Simply snap a picture of the color and the Colorsnap app will analyze it for you. It will then find the matching Sherwin-Williams paint shade for you. You can adjust lightness, saturation and hue for a more customized color shade, and that is all there is to it! The app is available for free on both the iTunes store and the Play store. Go paint the wall any color you want.

2. Home Design 3D iPad App ($4 for iPhone, $6 for iPad)

If you want to completely reinvent your room or make minor changes, download the excellent Home Design 3D app by LiveCad for your iOS device. You can try it for free before you shell out the few dollars. Simply drag your fingers to draw a room that matches the dimensions of your real one. Then drag in windows, furniture, fixtures and change proportions to match. With a simply click of a button the app will turn your design into a 3D version, where you can change colors, rearrange furniture, add floorboards or wood paneling, put up wall fixtures etc.

3. 3D Interior Room Design ($4.79 for Android)

While Home Design 3D is not yet available for Android, there is an alternative on the Play Store with a free demo version. The 3D Interior Room Design app will again create an animated 3D version of the room that you design, and let you change colors and items in it. You can even add wall tattoos and area rugs to your animated design.

4. Home Depot (Free for iOS and Android)

This is one of the handiest of apps that opens up a number of features when you select the nearest Home Depot store. It comes with a useful Toolbox section that includes tools like the Nut and Bolt finder and a caliper. The Calculator section will let you feed in dimensions of a wall or other element and tell you how many screw, wall panels, joint tapes etc. you will need.

5. HandyMan DIY ($2 for iOS) or the Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius ($5 for iOS or free)

Finally, try the HandyMan DIY for complete textual DIY instructions for a vast number of projects as well as material lists that you will need to complete it. Another similar app by Readers Digest called the Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius comes with over 1800 tips and ideas (300 for the free version) to make sure you get through a project without mistakes.
